If you thought you could boost your fashion credentials by clutching the latest purse, pouch or holdall this season, think again. Everyone will be looking at your feet.

Miuccia Prada's musings may seem hard to believe. Bags have been the rescue package for many a designer brand - those unable to establish high-level sales of pricey clothing and unwilling to exchange credibility for cash through a diffusion line. The sheer usefulness of bags - not to mention their high visibility - ensures their appeal. "After all," concedes shoe designer Emma Hope, whose pony-skin sneakers have had their own it-moment, "you can't make such a show-off statement with shoes - you can't really put them on the table in a restaurant."

But there is more to the renewed appeal of the shoe than economics. "For women, shoes are still about fantasy and dressing up - shoes can make you feel something special in a way a bag really can't," suggests Michael Lewis, Kurt Geiger's head of design direction. "Shoes can give you a different persona.

If that is the case, women will be positively schizophrenic this season: the latest statement shoes are driving towards new extremes, both in terms of proportion - from vertiginous stilettos to hefty, exaggerated soles - and design, with vintage, cartoon, and ultra- stylised sculptural elements all featuring. "I think we're all just a bit bored of hearing about it-bags and at the luxury level there is renewed excitement about shoes, which are suddenly much more creative, individual and wacky," says the accessories designer Orla Kiely.

Wearing designer shoes is part of fashion, however, the trend is literally damaging lanky legs of many a fashionistas, of which they are proud of.

At various catwalks, women models wear exquisite shoes, which are causing immense harm to their feet. In the recent Chloe show, some cat walkers walked on the ramp in dominatrix looking shoes, which held tightly to the feet and did not allow proper air circulation causing danger of fungal infection.

Some models are made to catwalk on ramps, believe it or not, in shoes without heels. The poor creatures had to walk on their toes. There are high-heeled shoes for models without middle part.

Nina Ricci has designer shoes with heels curved like a sword. Shoes by designer Alexander McQueen seems to be inspired by ‘The Flintstones’. Here the high heeled shoes are too large for the feet and had to be dragged by the heel while walking.

Designer shoes have become a tyranny for cat walkers.

Farewell to stick straight, it’s all about curves. As you may have noticed one of the most-important trends of the season, especially for spring 2008, is the inward-curved heel. We’ve also heard it referenced by other names, like hound’s tooth and banana heel. All name calling aside, this is one of the more interesting heels we’ve seen in a few seasons. It’s inconspicuously trendy, so anyone used to wearing heels and hoping for a little edge can certainly pull this look off. Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and every major fashion mag is highlighting them, and designer labels like Christian Dior and Prada are obviously all over the trend.

Take it one step further, look for the curved heel with a platform too. If you’re still hanging onto your holiday bonus, Christian Dior in Beverly Hills has a pair of pumps with crystal encrusted heels and ivory satin uppers that are truly gorgeous.

		Orthopedic surgeon Taryn Rose spent years fixing the foot problems of women who endured countless long work days in painful 3-inch heels. For those that have not experienced the comfort of her shoes, you probably think that fashion and comfort are mutually exclusive. Rose's shoes are made in Italy of top-quality materials, mostly by hand; each pair takes three hours. For cushioning, she uses Poron, a foam found in shock absorbers and NASA designs. She lines her shoes with Kid Leather which keeps the foot drier and cooler...so you can go barefoot in most of her styles. Rose offers advice for optimizing your experience in any shoes:
Take advantage of flats, which are in fashion this spring. Ballerina flats look charming with a Chanel skirt or a pair of Capris on weekends. Wear a heel that's two inches or lower for most of your day, and change into higher heels only when necessary. The best time to try on shoes is late afternoon. Test them on a tile floor; shoes can be deceptively comfortable on carpeting. You should never have to break in a shoe. The right shoe feels good the minute you put it on.
